About the Authors

Principal Investigators

Katherine Baicker, PhD, is Dean of the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago and holds the Emmett Dedmon professorship. Before that, she was an Adjunct Professor of Health Policy and Economics in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, an affiliate of the Jameel Poverty Action Lab, a nonresident senior fellow of the Brookings Institution, and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Social Insurance. She serves on the Congressional Budget Office's Panel of Health Advisers, as a Director of Eli Lilly, and on the Editorial Boards of Health Affairs and the Journal of Health Economics. From 2005-2007, Professor Baicker served as a Senate-confirmed Member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers.
Amy Finkelstein, PhD, is the John & Jennie S. MacDonald Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the co-Scientific Director of J-PAL North America. She is also the co-Director of the Public Economics Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research, where she is a Research Associate. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the Econometric Society. She has received numerous awards and fellowships including the John Bates Clark Medal (2012).

Oregon Principal Investigators

Heidi Allen, MSW, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Columbia University School of Social Work. Previously, Dr. Allen was a research scientist at the Center for Outcomes Research and Education at Providence Health & Services. She is currently serving on the Community Advisory Council of the Department of Human Services Office of Multicultural Health & Services.
Bill Wright, PhD, is the director at the Center for Outcomes Research and Education (CORE). Dr. Wright is a sociologist and research methodologist with a primary focus on survey design, and specializes in longitudinal survey research with low-income populations. His principal areas of interest include research in health policy, access to care and disparities in health care systems.

Investigators

Mira Bernstein, PhD, served as Project Manager for the Oregon Health Study at the National Bureau of Economic Research from 2008 to 2012. From 2002-2008 she was an assistant professor of mathematics at Wellesley College. She holds a BA in mathematics from Yale and a PhD in mathematics from Harvard, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at University of California, Berkeley.
Jonathan Gruber, PhD, is a Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has taught since 1992. He is an Associate Editor of both the Journal of Public Economics and the Journal of Health Economics. In 2009 he was elected to the Executive Committee of the American Economic Association. He is also a member of the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Social Insurance.
Joseph P. Newhouse, PhD, is the John D. MacArthur Professor of Health Policy and Management at Harvard University, Director of the Division of Health Policy Research and Education, chair of the Committee on Higher Degrees in Health Policy, and Director of the Interfaculty Initiative in Health Policy. He is a member of the faculties of the John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Harvard Medical School, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, as well as a Faculty Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Adam Sacarny, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. He is also a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and an Affiliate of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). His research explores the relationship between health care payment policy, provider and patient decision-making, and clinical quality.
Eric Schneider, MD, MSc is senior vice president for policy and research at The Commonwealth Fund. In 1997, he joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He has served on the Performance Measures Subcommittee of the American College of Physicians and the Cancer Quality Council of Ontario (Canada). His collaborative work includes national organizations such as the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), RAND, and the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
Sarah Taubman, ScD, is a Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. She is also an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Services at the University of Washington and a research associate in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Her research is in epidemiology and health economics.
Alan Zaslavsky, PhD, is a Professor of Health Care Policy (Statistics) in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, and a National Associate of the National Academy of Sciences.
